Year 4 Music Project “We Refugees.”

Year 4 Music Project “We Refugees.”

This week, Year 4 has been working on their Music Performance inspired by the poem ‘We Refugees’, written by Benjamin Zephaniah. Pupils have been discussing the importance of respecting the rights of refugees and why they should be supported, as well as the valuable contributions refugees have made to our society throughout history.  Pupils have learnt that refugees often seek shelter in another country because of war and in order to survive. Through the music project, pupils have developed their musical talents by singing, composing the lyrics to an original work, as well as playing various percussion instruments and guitars, alongside professional musicians. They have also showcased their artistic skills and excelled at their spoken language to improvise dramatised narrations, telling the real life stories of refugee children.  One of the most emotionally charged moments of their performance was a song pupils had learnt in Ukrainian, sung to raise awareness of the plight of children and families as a result of the war with Russia.  We hope Ukrainian and refugees from other countries will find a place of sanctuary and begin to rebuild their shattered lives.  We will be ready to welcome them to tour school.
